Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has been working through the government shutdown to keep the National Mall and other tourist sites open to the public.

Visitors to D.C. will find the Smithsonian open.for now. "The visitors centers are closed in Wawona and the Valley, and all the services generally provided by the NPS are not available". For that shutdown, the Department of Interior made the controversial decision to close public parks, monuments and battlefields.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s childhood home, historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and the visitor center at MLK National Historic Site in Atlanta are closed amid the federal government shutdown. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) chanted "tear down this wall", as thousands of veterans and supporters tore apart the barricades to access the shuttered property. For example, this means that roads that have already been open should remain open (think snow removal) and vaulted toilets (wilderness type restrooms) should remain open, however services that require staffing and maintenance such as campgrounds, full service restrooms, and concessions that require some Park staff or assistance will not be operating.

Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Kevin Donohue said the extra work for trash collection on federal land would amount to about $100,000 per week in personnel costs.

"It's very frustrating when we're being held hostage", Burnam said.

Spokesmen for the Alibates Flint Quarries and Lake Meredith National Recreation Area said they remain open during the weekend and are still awaiting guidance to know if they will be open on Monday.

"Because we are an independent entity that is funded through the sale of our products and services, and not by tax dollars, USPS will not be impacted", the U.S. Postal Service said Saturday in a statement on Twitter.

NATIONAL PARKS: National parks remain accessible while still following all applicable laws and procedures, according to a spokesperson. Another shutdown in 1995 lasted 21 days. An agency spokeswoman said the derivatives regulator could, however, call in additional staff in the event of a financial market emergency.

"Entrances to the parks will remain open and businesses within the parks may continue to operate under contingency plans now being finalized with the Park Service", he said.

"The vendors, visitors and gateway communities to our national parks suffered enormously during the government shutdown in 2013 because of deliberate actions by the Obama administration", McClintock said. The hang-up appears to be over whether a deal for a new spending bill should also extend immigration protections for people known as "Dreamers" whose parents brought them to the U.S.at a young age.

The Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island are closed. Office of Management and Budget General Counsel Mark Paoletta sent an email Saturday evening, obtained by The Washington Post, to deputy secretaries and general counsels across the government suggesting that they use carry-over funds "to minimize the shutdown's disruption".
