LG adds Google AI in 'smart home' push

LAS VEGAS-If you own a TiVo, you'll soon be able to control it through your Amazon Echo or Google Home.

And, this week, Changhong, Element, Funai, Haier, Hisense and Westinghouse are announcing new Android TVs with the Google Assistant. Shortly after the announcement of Assistant coming to display-endowed speakers, we discovered the Lenovo Smart Display then we learned about the JBL Link View.

LG is not entirely straightforward about the technical specifications of the WK9 either, merely listing on the Korean company's official United States website support for proprietary ThinQ Artificial Intelligence capabilities, "premium class sound" tuned by Meridian Audio, the 8-inch size of the product's touch screen display, and both built-in Google Assistant and Chromecast functionality. The Lenovo Smart Display comes in an 8 inch and 10 inch variant and looks pretty great too.

The Google Assistant, meanwhile, is also headed to the Dish Hopper, Joey, and Wally devices. With the camera above the screen you can make Duo calls. One voice command and you'll have it right in front of you, via Google Maps. As for LG, it has an advantage because the company knows the smart home game. Since IFTTT works with so many different systems and devices, this will enable extensive home automation customization beyond activities enabled by Google Assistant.
