OnePlus 5 Receives Face Unlock Feature Via OxygenOS Open Beta 3


"In the spirit of building together, we'd also like to ask our OnePlus 3 and 3T users: Do you want Face Unlock too?" In addition to this feature, this third Open Beta for the OnePlus 5 adds an app shortcut for the Recorder app on the phone's launcher.

OnePlus 5T's Face Unlock feature could come to OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones as well, hinted the company co-founder Carl Pei, in a forum post. The response has been largely affirmative, with most users eager to get Face Unlock on board the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Rolling out as an incremental over-the-air (OTA) update, the new version brings assistive lighting for the preloaded Face Unlock feature and includes various performance improvements and fixes, as well as the December Android security patch. OnePlus 5T's Face Unlock that coexists with fingerprint scanner has received good reception from the users. This apparently helps the company expands the experience to devices other than the OnePlus 5T that grabbed some eyeballs, thanks to the custom facial recognition feature.

After officially treating OnePlus 5 users to Android 8.0 Oreo last week, OnePlus is now rolling out another update.

This is unlike the iPhone X's Face ID which projects dots to create a depth map and an infrared image of a person's face. OnePlus 5 now relies on fingerprint sensor, embedded in the home button, to unlock the phone.

The final Android Oreo release for the OnePlus 5 is due in early 2018. There are also clarity improvements for self-portrait shots under low light.
