The response has been largely affirmative, with most users eager to get Face Unlock on board the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Rolling out as an incremental over-the-air (OTA) update, the new version brings assistive lighting for the preloaded Face Unlock feature and includes various performance improvements and fixes, as well as the December Android security patch. After officially treating OnePlus 5 users to Android 8.0 Oreo last week, OnePlus is now rolling out another update.
This is unlike the iPhone X's Face ID which projects dots to create a depth map and an infrared image of a person's face. OnePlus 5 now relies on fingerprint sensor, embedded in the home button, to unlock the phone.
The final Android Oreo release for the OnePlus 5 is due in early 2018. There are also clarity improvements for self-portrait shots under low light.
