Kedar Jadhav, Shardul Thakur named in India squad for South Africa ODIs

The MSK Prasad-led selection panel, on Saturday, named the 17-member squad for the six-match ODI series against South Africa. As it was expected Virat Kohli will be leading the team. Ashwin and Jadeja who are included in the Test squad will not be sporting the blue jersey anytime soon as the spin duo of Chahal and Yadav has just been phenomenal.

Jadhav (hamstring) and Thakur (shoulder) were injured during the ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka that concludes on Sunday with the inconsequential third T20I in Mumbai. However, it was expected that they might make the cut for the South Africa tour. Skipper Virat Kohli after opting out of the home series against the Sri Lankans will be back in action marching his troops. Dinesh Karthik doubles up as wicketkeeper besides being a middle-order batsman. However, it wasn't enough for the 25-year-old to cement a place in India's ODI squad on their much awaited tour of South Africa next year. Suresh Raina continues to be overlooked by selectors even after passing the Yo-Yo test last week.

On expected lines, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami constitute the pace bowling trio while they will have a two-ODI old partner in Shardul Thakur instead of Umesh Yadav.

The two seasoned spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, were once again ignored as the selectors made a decision to persist with the wrist-spinning duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal along with left-arm orthodox Akshar Patel.
