Sports Director Rick Russo reports Pruitt will formally be introduced on campus in an early evening news conference at 6:05 p.m.in the Peyton Manning Locker Room.

Knoxville radio station WNML first reported that Pruitt had accepted the job. Pruitt and Sherrer also coached together at Hoover High School from 2005-06 when Pruitt served as the defensive coordinator and Sheerer as a defensive assistant.

Pruitt, 43, has been the defensive coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban at Alabama since 2016. This will be Pruitt's first head coaching job as he looks to replace Butch Jones who was sacked on November 12 after going 34-27 over five seasons.

Before his coaching career began, Pruitt played college football as a defensive back at Middle Tennessee State before finishing his playing career at Alabama.

While at Florida State, his defense was first in the nation in scoring, allowing just 10.7 points per game.

An athletics director was suspended, a hall of fame coach was elevated to his position and after countless conversations, the Vols end up with a head coach born and raised in the state of Alabama.

Pruitt has been one of the best defensive coordinators in the country over the last several years, building a 128-31 record as a two-time Broyles Award Finalist and assistant coach. He left to become Florida State's defensive coordinator in 2013 and won a title in his one year with the Seminoles. It would also help with the staff transition - especially in the area of recruiting.

Pruitt's success this season is particularly impressive given how hard Alabama's defense has been hit by injuries. He's a real good leader and the players like to play for him. Fulmer, Tennessee's Hall of Fame football coach, took over as athletic director last Friday following the termination of Currie.

Tennessee was close to hiring Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano on November 26 before that deal fell through amid a public backlash. Tennessee Chancellor Beverley Davenport gave Fulmer "full authority" to make the hire.

Pruitt was also a recent finalist for the Mississippi State head coaching position, but the Bulldogs hired Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead on November 28.
