Apple announces best iPad app and game of the year


Apple pulled back the curtain on its Best of 2017 lists on Thursday, highlighting the most popular apps, games, books, TV shows, movies, music and podcasts of the year.

On iPad and its larger screen it is perhaps no surprise that a creative app, illustration app Procreate, was the year's top seller.

Moving on to the best games of the year, Splitter Critters took home the title on the iPhone, while The Witness came out on top on the iPad.

The picks include two puzzle games and a meditation app. The app has a plethora of tools that provide a ground for layer-based video editing right on the iPhone.

Apple has also released the usual top charts listings for free and paid apps and games.

The top free iPhone apps of the year included lots of usual suspects: Bitmoji, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, Netflix, Spotify, and Uber.

Super Mario Run tops the most downloaded games chart, followed by 8 Ball Pool, Snake VS Block, Ballz, Word Cookies and Subway Surfers.

Snap may have had a rough year, but you wouldn't know it from the App Store charts.

Apple also has new editorial this time around; "trends of the year".

Talking about apps, the App Store editors have identified four breakout trends in app culture for 2017.

The top movie of the year was "Moana", followed by "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "Wonder Woman". Apple adds that in the US, Drake leads the Album of the year on Apple Music with "More Life". Taylor Swift's album "reputation" has already shot up to #3 on the 2017 United States top album charts, despite having only been available for a short period of time.

Drama is the genre dominating the iTunes TV charts this year, with favourites like "Game of Thrones" and "The Walking Dead" topping the year.
