Sibal had in the apex court said that the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute should be heard after the 2019 general elections, which triggered a major political storm. He, however, noted that the Congress has said the views expressed by Sibal, who represents the Sunni Waqf Board in the case in the Supreme Court, were his own. "Today, in the Supreme Court, Congress leader and Sunni Waqf Board lawyer Kapil Sibalji took an unusual stand on the Ram Mandir issue". This clarification comes after both PM Modi and Amit Shah attacked Kapil Sibal for trying to delay the hearing and demanded Congress party to make their stance clear. Regarding the entire controversy, Sibal said that, " Will discussion on my going to the court & representing someone solve serious problems in the country? He is entitled to do that but is it right for him to say postpone hearing till 2019?
The stakeholders in the case had moved the apex court after the Allahabad HC directed the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and the Lord Ram Lalla to settle for a three-way division of the disputed site.
On the campaign trail in Gujarat, Modi recalled how his government made a decision to oppose "triple talaq" in the Supreme Court risking a possible backlash in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. "Do you want to keep the issue unresolved for political gain or loss in the elections?" he asked the Congress.More news: Spain high court drops warrants for Puigdemont, 4 ex-Catalan leaders
Following this, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Amit Shah, in a press briefing, took a potshot at the Congress Party and its vice president, Rahul Gandhi, for adopting "double standard" in the matter. "Or, is it the case that the board and the Congress are working in tandem?" he asked.
"Yesterday in the SC, a Congress MP Kapil Sibal was arguing (which is his right) for the Babri Masjid. A representative of Sunni Waqf Board said that we wish that the issue is decided at the earliest by the courts". The Congress must clarify if Sibal is representing it or the Sunni Waqf Board? The same has been said by the Law Minister many times. Why does he have to link Ram Mandir with elections?
He also said that the true character of the party was revealed the way one of its leaders pitched to extend the dates of the Ayodhya matter hearing. "They have also gone from Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh", Modi said, taking a swipe at the opposition party over their humiliating electoral defeat in the northern state.
