Arkansas is expected to name current Southern Methodist coach Chad Morris to the same position with the Razorbacks, according to reports from the Associated Press and ESPN. A deal could be worked out as soon as Wednesday.
Morris, 49, spent the past three seasons as the head coach at SMU in Dallas and gained notoriety for his Texas only recruiting philosophy.
Morris leaves SMU after taking the job in 2015.
Morris, a Texas A&M graduate, was the Clemson offensive coordinator for four years when the team posted the top three scoring seasons in school history.More news: Samsung starts production of world's first 512GB embedded flash storage
"The future is tremendously bright at the University of Arkansas with the addition of Chad Morris", Razorbacks athletic director Hunter Yurachek said in a statement.
Although Arkansas was known first to approach Auburn Coach and Fort Smith native and former Arkansas offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn (an approach helping enrich Malzhan with an Auburn raise and contract extension), Morris was prominently mentioned as a candidate of Arkansas interest since Bielema was dismissed. Before getting to the collegiate level, Morris compiled a 169-38 career record as a high school coach in the state of Texas. He won three state titles overall and played in six state championship games.
The Mustangs are guaranteed a winning record for the first time since 2012 and for the fifth time since the program rebooted in 1989. "I am pleased that Hunter Yurachek had the opportunity to be involved in the final decision and offer and we can not wait to have Chad leading our program". SMU improved to 5-7 a year ago, including a 38-16 win over No. 11 Houston.
