When we first wrote about Batman Ninja, the upcoming full-length animated film starring the Caped Crusader, we thought it sounded interesting. Batman is missing all of his high-tech weapons, but he trains his mind to take on a powerful Joker, who now claims he's the most powerful figure in Japan.
Batman Ninja gets released in 2018 directed by Jumpei Mizusaki, with the screenplay by Kazuki Nakashima, character design by Takashi Okazaki, music by Yugo Kanno, and animation production by Kamikaze Douga. Announced in October, this adaptation puts the DC characters into a mix of feudal Japan and Gotham where our hero can travel by both flying Batmobile and dramatic horse-drawn carriage. Interestingly, both projects take Batman back in time and away from the US, with Gotham by Gaslight set in a version of Gotham in Victorian Britain.
A bevy of supporting characters seem to arrive at some point, too, including Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Robin, Poison Ivy, Nightwing, Penguin and, in a weird twist, Gorilla Grodd.More news: Hugh Freeze releases statement in response to NCAA ruling on Ole Miss
From what I can tell from the trailer, the movie opens with Batman and the Joker engaged in a typically tense battle to the death, only to find themselves hurled back to medieval Japan.
Are you looking forward to seeing Batman trade modern Gotham for feudal Japan? The unconventional approaches to these properties in films like The Lego Batman Movie and now this are breathing new life into things we've seen a million times. You can pick up Batman Ninja on DVD or Blu-Ray sometime next year.
