Huge Waze update brings support for motorcycles and voice commands

According to the company, the update brings some of the most requested features including support for motorcycle routes, "OK Waze" voice command, and more. Traffic data garnered by Waze from its global army of bikers will then be treated a little differently from auto data, resulting in tailored routes and times.

In addition to the Waze voice commands, the app is also adding support for carpool lanes and a motorcycle mode, which includes streets that a bike could fit down, but a vehicle can't. In some places, only hands-free use of mobile phones is allowed. Waze now has support for carpooling lanes, the first on all navigations apps at large. To do this, go to Settings Sound & voice Talk to Waze, and then toggle the "Listen for "OK Waze" on".

"Whether you're riding with one passenger or more; in a hybrid, electric, or clean-fuel auto; with a special pass; or a combination of all of the above, Waze will determine your optimal route", the company wrote. Some of the new features will only matter if you've got certain driving habits or vehicles, but the voice command improvements will be useful to more Wazers. You can also use "OK Waze" to report traffic jam, accidents, and such.

HOV routing will give you directions that include carpool lanes, once you activate the option in the Navigation section of the app's Settings, and select the HOV pass that applies to you and your carpool crew.

Sadly though, Talk to Waze is only limited to the US, UK, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand only. Those who qualify for carpool lanes because they're driving a hybrid or electric auto must go to Settings Navigation Vehicle Type.

The new motorcycle mode will direct bikers to routes that are optimized for two or three wheels, based on where other users have traveled.

Waze supports carpool lanes in 21 US states and Washington, D.C.as well as Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, Canada. The company said that the more riders use the Waze motorcycle mode, the "smarter the routing will become". The motorcycle mode can be turned on within the settings for "vehicle type".
