Thursday is the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout, a day to encourage smokers to make a plan to quit or plan in advance and quit smoking that day.

There are more than 36 million smokers nationwide, and health experts are reminding people that tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and death in the world. The annual event focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of smoking and benefits of quitting.
