21 children injured at San Diego gym after platform collapses

Around 50 children and two adults, aged 72 and 46, had gathered for a birthday party at Vault PK in Barrio Logan, where the 10x30 ft wooden platform collapsed on Saturday night. Authorities said the injuries ranged from mild to moderate, also including a spine and a head injury. Parent Cory Brizendine told KGTV he suspected the platform wasn't very sturdy as between 30 or 40 children were called to the stairwell to get some pizza. Three or four may have suffered spinal injuries and were immediately transported to the hospital in "more serious" condition, SDFD spokesperson Steve Wright said.

A woman was also trapped beneath the rubble but was freed by rescue teams, KSWB reported.

"Once the majority of kids got up there the whole platform collapsed", he said.

Joe Saari, a parent of two children, who suffered minor bruises due to the collapse, said that when he and his wife dropped off their kids at the facility, there were 100 to 150 kids at the center. The facility in question includes trampolines and bouncy houses.

Zachary Smith, who was standing on a platform above the stairwell, which was often used as a "viewing area" said that he fell on top of a little girl when the structure gave way. "We are truly heartbroken tonight, as these children and their parents aren't just our members - we see them weekly, they are our gym family", Ho said. However, none of them were injured. I am just as devastated for all the children affected as any other parent.
