Veterans Day parade organizer dies

The annual Veterans Day parade, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Savannah and the city of Savannah, takes place Saturday at 10 a.m. Nicole Erwin of WKMS News was on site to capture the events in photos.

It's a glorious site - The bands, the floats, the flags and the energy combine for the salute of all salutes as our community's heroes stroll down N. Harbor Drive during the annual San Diego Veteran's Day Parade.

"If you're wondering how to say "thanks for serving" to a veteran in your life, consider inviting him or her to spend time outdoors with you", said Erika Rivers, director the Department of Natural Resources Parks and Trails Division. To get their free entrée, veterans and active military members must present their military ID at checkout.

A Veterans Day concert will be held at 2 p.m.at the Tobin Center. The parade will pause at 11 a.m. the Central Square.

It stepped off at 12:30 p.m.in front of City Hall on Lakeside Avenue. The ceremony will honor veterans and Boy and Girl Scout candidates.

The service of all US military veterans is saluted with the annual Veterans Day observance on Saturday, November 11, at the Veterans Memorial Building in Sonoma. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.in the cemetery's gazebo. The ceremony will include readings honoring veterans that have been written by local students.

Veterans Day has its roots in a proclamation issued by President Woodrow Wilson in November 1919, a year after World War I ended, designating Nov. 11 as Armistice Day. From 1971-1977, Veterans Day was held in late October.
