Kotaku noticed a page on the Sony Rewards Passes website that mentions you can earn points by unlocking silver, gold, and platinum trophies in the games you play.

Get 10 Platinum Trophies while you game and earn 1,000 points.

The point distributions is as follows: a 1000 silver trophies will net you 100 points and 25 gold will give you 250, while 10 platinums will give you a 1000 points.

You won't start making money overnight as the program requires a hefty amount of trophies to even get started. The reward scheme, which is available in the United States only, lets players earn points for racking up Silver, Gold, and Platinum trophies but the caveat is that your existing trophies don't count.

In its early stages, 1,000 points equates to a $10 discount voucher for the PS Store, but is now restricted to the United States for the time being.

Sony and PS3 did not include a trophy system at launch but instead added it in a few years later. For many, achievements have become an addiction of sorts and forces those who want the 1000 gamerscore to do things they wouldn't normally do.

PlayStation is not the only platform to offer achievement trophies, but is the first major player to offer associated rewards; both Steam and Xbox offer superficial achievements.
