Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has fired his longtime confidante Emmerson Mnangagwa in a dramatic turn of events to the long-running ruling ZANU PF succession saga.Mnangagwa, until Tuesday Zimbabwe's First Vice President, was relieved of his position for alleged disloyalty.
The fact that Mnangagwa's removal was announced by a government minister and not the chief secretary to the president and cabinet highlighted the deterioration in their relationship.
Mnangagwa had been vice president since 2014 when his predecessor, Joice Mujuru, was sacked for allegedly plotting to oust Mugabe. It had become evidence that his conduct of his duties had become inconsistent with his official responsibilities.
"The vice president has consistently and persistently exhibited traits of disloyalty, disrespect, deceitfulness and unreliability", Moyo told reporters.More news: OnePlus to announce OnePlus 5T on November 16
On Sunday Grace Mugabe called Mnangagwa a "coup plotter" and a "coward" in a speech that ruffled more than a few feathers in Zanu-PF.
Mnangagwa did not attend the security briefing which was meant to be held at Mugabe's private residence, having already tendered his resignation, although earlier information we got suggested that Mugabe had barred him from attending.
Grace has said she was ready to become deputy to her husband.
Speculation is now swirling over whether Grace Mugabe will be appointed to the vacant vice president's post at a party congress next month. "I can do a great job'".
