Jahlil Okafor may request buyout from Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers will not exercise the fourth-year, $6.3 million option for center Jahlil Okafor, a source confirmed to ESPN. Today, he remains on the Philadelphia 76ers roster, but his long-term future with the teams seems to be done for after the team decided against picking up his fourth-year contract option yesterday.

Okafor has played just one game this season, logging 22 minutes, and played just 12 games after the All-Star break last season as he's fallen out of favor with the Sixers.

The Sixers have been trying to trade Okafor for more than two seasons. "Because he said he would be giving me away to a team for free". It's just, I want to get on the court.

Okafor called it "fine" that he's out of the rotation, but was adamant about wanting to play elsewhere.

The team will not pick up the 2018-19 option on the player it drafted third overall in the 2015 draft.

"Honestly, I did not want them to pick up my option", Okafor said at the team's shootaround Wednesday. With Embiid's rise to prominence, Okafor has since been shuffled out of the lineup entirely - and he now just wants a chance to play somewhere else.

But Ainge has been unwilling to give up anything of real value (Marcus Smart or Terry Rozier), and this time sounds no different, as Keith Pompey of Philly.com is reporting the C's won't give up much for Okafor and are hoping for an eventual buyout.

A buyout would allow the 21-year-old center to sign with any team that's interested in him, and last season, there was at least some interes5.

Okafor also believes that the team waited too long to try and move him in a trade.

It's been two weeks since the National Basketball Association season tipped off, so it's about time we get another story about a potential Jahlil Okafor-Philadelphia 76ers divorce, and reports of the Boston Celtics being interested in the big man's services. "I'm not playing here and at the end of this season, I'm an unrestricted free agent".
