It was another black day in the United States on Wednesday after a man drove a rented pick-up truck over pedestrians and cyclists near the World Trade Center memorial, Manhattan killing 8 and injuring 11.
Federal authorities were treating the episode as a terrorist attack and were taking the lead in the investigation, a senior law enforcement official said.
"This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them", New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
Five of the people killed were Argentine tourists who traveled to NY for a 30-year high school reunion celebration, said a senior official in Santa Fe Province, where they were from. Martín Ludovico Marro, a sixth member of the group, was wounded. He had apparently lived in Paterson, N.J., and Tampa, Fla.More news: Bharti Airtel's net takes a hit on 'competitive pressures'
The Home Depot rental truck used in the attack. So, the said nuisance is it really the terror attacks or the unchecked, rampant-running gun violence.... seems like a tough guess? A truck plowed into a bicycle-only lane on a busy street in Manhattan.
"He wasn't putting up a fight", the witness said. "We thought it was a Halloween prank".
"From the New York Post: "'What happened was there was a vehicle crash... he came out of one of the cars.
Then he saw the suspect's gun and "realized it was serious". Several of the men have pleaded guilty. "It's not clear if the scenes are connected". A bomb squad is also on scene examining a vehicle. Nearly a mile north of the World Trade Center, the bike path is usually filled with walkers, cyclists, joggers and skateboarders.
