Modi leads tributes to Sardar Patel on birth anniversary

In an indirect attack on the Congress just weeks ahead of the Gujarat elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said some parties and governments had earlier tried to run down and erase the contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in unifying the nation immediately after Independence.

"We remember Sardar Patel on his birth anniversary. My tributes to him on his birth anniversary", Gandhi tweeted.

The Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic, Itanagar observed the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel by organising an essay writing competition on the life of Sardar Patel. Earlier, President Ram Nath Kovind, vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu, the PM and home minister Rajnath Singh paid floral tributes to Patel on Parliament Street, where his statue is installed.

Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh at an event said Patel had played the biggest role in ensuring the accession of the state to the country.

"India is a country full of diversity".

The Prime Minister said India's teaching of unity amid diversity is relevant in the global context especially at a time when the racial fights have become the order of the day in several countries.

Prasad said shortly after Independence, there were 555 princely states and Patel successfully handled 554 of them, while Jawaharlal Nehru handled just one (Jammu and Kashmir), "which he messed up by taking to the United Nations, against Patel's opinion on the issue".

The School Principal S.K Singh said Sardar Patel was a great hero of our freedom struggle.
