Trump 'insensitive' in call to fallen soldier widow: Congresswoman

Sgt. La David Johnson was among the four USA soldiers killed by enemy fire in the October 4 ambush.

During a call with the president, The Post reported on Wednesday, Trump offered to write Baldridge a personal check for $25,000 and said he would work to establish an online fundraiser for the family.

Kelly's voice grew thin at points during an extraordinary and emotional briefing at the White House. I like to call when it's appropriate when I think I'm able to do it. Kelly added that he had recommended to Trump that he not make such calls.

The president also said that he has called "every family of somebody that's died", but several Gold Star family members told news outlets that they have never had a call with Trump after their relative was killed in action.

"That's not a criticism. that's not a negative thing", Kelly added, saying he was just giving it as an example to Trump at the time.

"The traditional way, if you look at President Obama and other presidents, majority didn't make calls".

In media interviews and on Twitter, Wilson said the presidenthad been callous in telling Myeshia Johnson that her husband "must have known what he signed up for".

The marine general also said he was not criticizing ex-President Obama when he told Trump that Obama had not for called him after his son Robert Kelly was killed by an Afghan police officer in an ambush.

Sgt Johnson's mother, Cowanda Jones-Johnson, told the Associated Press that the congresswoman's account was correct.

Mr Trump later tweeted: "Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof)".

Mr Kelly told reporters that Mr Trump had expressed his condolences "in the best way that he could". "And the worst part of it: when he hung up, you know what she turned to me and said?"

"He was doing exactly what he wanted to do when he was killed. He knew what the possibilities were because we were at war", Kelly said, channeling Dunford's words to him upon the death of Kelly's son.

He "thanked the family for their service, commended them for having an American hero in their family - and I don't know how you could take that any other way". "She was just told that he can not have an open casket funeral which gives her all kinds of nightmares about what his body must look, what his face must look, and this is what the president of the United States says to her", Wilson said. "And everyone knows that Donald Trump does not choose his words carefully". It was absolutely insane, unnecessary.

Kelly said he advised the President to not make the phone calls because there is "no flawless way" to call the family of a fallen soldier. "It absolutely stuns me".
