The United States Now Plans to Leave UNESCO


The withdrawal goes into effect at the end of 2018.

The United States announced its withdrawal from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Thursday, withthe State Department citing among other issues a "continuing anti-Israel bias", prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order the Foreign Ministry to prepare its own withdrawal and Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon to hail "a new era in the UN".

"At the time when conflicts continue to tear apart societies across the world, it is deeply regrettable for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations agency promoting education for peace and protecting culture under attack", she said.

Some of the United States's closest allies are among UNESCO's 195 members.

He said: "Unesco has become a battlefield for Israel bashing and has disregarded its true role and objective". The U.S. stopped making payments to the agency in 2011, but maintained an office at its Paris headquarters in the hopes of encouraging a change of course from behind the scenes.

UNESCO is a specialized agency in the United Nations that encourages global peace and security through education, science, culture and communication.

In recent years, Israel has repeatedly complained about what it says is the body taking sides in disputes over cultural heritage sites in Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories.
