Facebook and Instagram outage leaves social media users stunned


Multiple services, like Down Detector and Outage Report, have high numbers of users reporting the issues.

Thousands of Facebook users appear unable to load the social network on desktop computers or mobile phones.

Website DownDetector showed a spike in "total blackout" and log-in error reports for both sites from 4pm on Wednesday.

The hashtag #facebookdown was trending on Twitter.

Facebook reportedly confirmed the outages with a statement posted to Facebook, which is not accessible by a large portion of its users.

Nearly 90 per cent of problems on Facebook in the United Kingdom were reported as total blackouts or users being unable to log in, while on Instagram the core issue was with its news feed.

A number of users reported that the social network was back up after 1 p.m. ET. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced new Oculus hardware, called Oculus Go, at an event in San Jose as Facebook continued to experience issues.
