"I was playing very high intensity the whole match, changing the directions and not making many mistakes", Nadal said. He fought off two against Lucas Pouille in the first-round. "I have been there couple of times, semifinals and final".

In January, he also had a verbal run-in with tennis legend John McEnroe who called Kyrgios "a black eye for the sport" and failed to make it past the early rounds of a Grand Slam.

"She played unbelievable tennis", Halep said of Garcia.

Tennis world number one Rafael Nadal lifted his sixth title this year after easing past Nick Kyrgios 6-2 6-1 in the final of the China Open in Beijing on Sunday.

"In the semi-final I played well, obviously beating Alex, it's a typical type of week for me: beat a player well, then pretty much no-show".

"Of course, some moments was a little bit odd for me, something a little bit unusual", Nadal, 31, said. Muguruza retired during her opening match on Monday because of a cold.

Nadal said: "Of course it is a nice feeling [to win a tournament after injury]".

But that was soon fixed and there was little between the two players until Garcia broke Halep in the 10th game to grab the first set.

Garcia was 0-40 down on her own serve until dragging it to 40-40 and then saving half a dozen break points before somehow winning the game to go 4-3 up. With the score tied at 3-3 in the second set, Garcia saved nine consecutive break points in the seventh game, before taking a 4-3 lead but Halep recovered to force a tiebreak. At 40-0 in the final game, Halep won with a clean forehand victor down the line. Halep achieved the women's world #1 ranking with the victory.

"All I can tell you is the difference I feel inside now that I know how to channel my career -- the money, the publicity, the notoriety -- into something meaningful".

The 26-year-old Bulgarian exited the tournament in three sets to world number one Rafael Nadal, on a day when the outside hard court in the Chinese capital appeared shrouded in smog.
