Blade Runner sequel off to slow start


Blade Runner 2049 might not have been a box office success despite receiving a wave of positive reviews from fans and critics, however it seems like Denis Villeneuve's sequel to Scott Ridley's 1982 Blade Runner could potentially be considered for this year's Oscars. "Alcon and Denis [Villeneuve, the director] made an wonderful movie". The film's $150 million price tag also means it needs to meet a worldwide earnings goal of $400 million.

When Jared Leto originally joined "Blade Runner 2049" it was widely assumed that the Academy Award victor would be going toe-to-toe with Ryan Gosling in the hugely anticipated blockbuster.

Despite glowing reviews, the big budget follow-up to cult sci-fi classic Blade Runner failed to impress at the box office on its opening weekend.

"Blade Runner 2049" finished its underwhelming opening weekend with a bit of good news, bringing in $32.8 million at 4,058 sites in North America, thanks to a better-than-projected performance on Sunday. "Where we did do business was in the major markets".

There's more than a little truth to it, though, and we can only hope that it is a wrong that's righted in the near future. Set thirty years after the original film, the story depicts a replicant blade runner named K, who discovers the remains of a once-pregnant replicant.

The Mountain Between Us is a 2017 American romantice survival adventure film directed by Hany Abu-Assad and written by Chris Weitz and J. Mills Goodloe, based on the novel of the same name by Charles Martin. Based on the Hasbro toys and television series, the movie's voice cast includes Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Uzo Aduba and singer Sia.

Globally, the film took $50.2m and claimed the number one spot in 45 of its 63 markets, Screen Daily reported.

The Chinese comedy Never Say Die took $66m globally to top the global box office, pushing Kingsman: The Golden Circle into second place.
