Andres Iniesta signs new lifetime contract with Barcelona

Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu believes his club can play a central role in helping to build bridges of dialogue in Spain.

"The only thing we can desire is that everything calms down, that we can live peacefully and leave the conflict behind".

But the 33-year-old Spanish global has now disappointed clubs like Chelsea, Juventus, Inter Milan who have been monitoring his progress at Barcelona.

Iniesta was crucial in Barcelona's side alongside Xavi, who left the Spanish side in 2015.

Spanish media had reported that Iniesta was not pleased that the team took too long to start negotiations for his new deal. "It's just a question of time, but I hope he renews as soon as possible".

However, in tying down Iniesta, Bartomeu has at least ensured that one of Barca's all-time greats will see out the rest of his career at the Camp Nou.

Iniesta is the only player at Barcelona who can match Messi's haul of 30 trophies with the club.

The contract agreement brought to an end months of speculation over his future after the club confirmed the "contract for life" on Friday.

Louis van Gaal Iniesta entrusted Iniesta with his first-team debut by during the 2002/03 campaign. They are followed by Lionel Messi, whose streak stands at 594.

Iniesta has only ever played for Barca - winning eight La Liga titles and the Champions League four times.
