25, Petty completed his 40th anniversary tour with a performance at The Hollywood Bowl. Sitting on the hardwood floors of that first apartment in Santa Monica, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were my constant companions.

Petty was both a musician and obsessive fan, one who met his childhood heroes and lived out the fantasies of countless young rock lovers. He also formed the band The Travelling Wilburys with fellow artists George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne.

To which Petty responded, "That's pretty wild, right?" Simple as that sounds, it's a tremendous rush to this day to me to just make something happen.

The world changed more than Petty did over the past few decades.

As I briskly leapt up the steps to the sixth floor, I listened to classic rock radio on Spotify and the music shuffled to Petty.
