Turn 10 Slams Into Reverse on Forza 7's VIP Pass

When you're zipping around the tracks in Forza Motorsport 7, it can be hard to truly take in the breathtaking details in the visuals, especially if you're using the cockpit view.

VIP membership in Forza games costs $19.99 and has traditionally provided players with a permanent credits boost for completing events and a collection of exclusive cars, among other bonuses. Whether it will soothe fan resentment, particularly in the context of how the VIP pass was sold, remains to be seen. In Forza 7, Turn 10 ditched the always-on double credit bonus for five limited use "mod cards".

Besides addressing the VIP controversy, Turn 10's studio head Alan Hartman also talked briefly about PC performance. Don't despair at the thought though, after a little over 10 hours I had already reached auto tier five, at which point I had access to every vehicle in the game. But while the wording was clarified-it now explicitly states that the upgrade includes "five 100% CR bonus Mod cards (five uses each per card)" the package itself, which was the real problem, remained unchanged. This wasn't communicated in the publicity material for the VIP editions of Forza 7, and many fans - expecting the same perks they had previously enjoyed - were understandably annoyed at having paid a higher price for what they saw as reduced content.

Forza Motorsport 7's developer, Turn 10, has apologized to players who bought the Ultimate Edition of the game, saying it is sorry if its VIP pass was misleading or disappointing. Most concerning was that the Microsoft Store listing wasn't clear about the new limitation at first. "As soon as we heard from our community that there was confusion about the VIP description in the Windows Store, we immediately updated it", the studio said in a statement.

One of the more divisive aspects of Forza Motorsport 7 has been its play for microtransactions via race-altering mods and the effect it has had on the VIP membership benefits - it's something we were concerned about in our review. In addition to the cars, we're also sending all Forza 7 VIPs 1 million credits. The team says it is "working around the clock" to find and resolve issues as they're reported.
