Minneapolis Bid to Host 2026 World Cup Moves Forward

The United Bid Committee named Denver as one of 32 cities across North America that could serve as hosts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

And in nine years, Atlanta could reach the apex of the world's most popular game, as it's been revealed the city could potentially host a FIFA World Cup match in 2026.

Also eliminated were Birmingham, Ala.; Cleveland; Indianapolis; Jacksonville, Fla; New Orleans; San Antonio; and two Canadian cities, Ottawa, Ontario and Regina, Saskatchewan. Of those, six (Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Atlanta, Foxborough and Seattle) have been proposed using venues now used by MLS teams.

Tampa is among 32 potential host cities, including four in Canada, three in Mexico and 24 others in the United States.

"We were so impressed by all the applicants that we will continue to engage with all the cities as part of our hosting strategy", bid committee executive director John Kristick said in a statement. "We are proud that FC Cincinnati and our collaboration with our fans, our community and business partners have unleashed this soccer movement and put Cincinnati on the national and global soccer stage".

Federation Internationale de Football Association will announce the victor in June.

The 2026 World Cup will be expanded to a 48-team format requiring an increase in first class venues and training facilities.

All three Mexican bidding cities (Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey) are widely expected to make the final cut.

FIFA, world soccer's governing body, is scheduled to vote on the 2026 host at their 2018 Congress in Moscow.

The press release indicates that a major factor in the decision was that each city "features existing or already planned stadiums and other world-class infrastructure". And now there's a chance that the men's World Cup will make a return to the Southland in 2026, and may even pass through other US cities like Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.

Morocco made the only other bid for the 2026 games.
