Trump defends response to crisis in Puerto Rico in new tweets

"Puerto Rico was totally destroyed".

"I believe the Puerto Ricans are pulling their weight".

"It is a community effort", Evelyn Torres said at a fund-raising event in the Bronx. "As soon as we can get those up the more life-saving aid can come in".

The Puerto Rican National Guard deliver food and water via helicopter to hurricane survivors as they deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

Renee Acosta, a resident, was quoted as saying, "If he's not here, he shouldn't be criticizing the community efforts".

"People are drinking off a creek. No long lines for you", Manuel tweeted. "Someone will say, 'Right this way, sir.' They'll clear a path".

"The loss of life - it's always tragic - but it's been incredible the results that we've had with respect to loss of life", he reportedly said (paywall) as he was about to leave the White House to go to his New Jersey golf club for the weekend.

"We are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency", Cruz said at a news conference.

"We are dying here". I keep saying it: SOS.

Carmen Yulin Cruz, mayor of Puerto Rico's largest city San Juan, condemned the slow response, tearfully telling journalists on Friday that, if it did not speed up, "what we we are going to see is something close to a genocide".

Writing on Twitter, Mr Trump said: 'Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help.

Still, they reiterated their pride in the government's response, emphasizing their efforts to work together and with the teams on the ground.

Around the same time that Trump was on Twitter, Cruz tweeted thanks to the politicians who had seen what San Juan needed first hand.

But according to the president, Cruz need look no further than herself for the problems. I am done being politically correct. "The Fake News Networks are working overtime in Puerto Rico doing their best to take the spirit away from our soldiers and first R's". "Donald has shown his true self: narcissistic, petty, lacking in empathy, and failing to lead", he wrote. He will also speak with the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands. "You're going straight to hell".

However, after a week of growing criticism, the president's patience appears to be waning. This is a "people are dying" story. Planes have been flying to Puerto Rico, but only to drop off equipment. Electricity is out on much of the island. "We're literally starting from scratch".

"He didn't have this reaction for Harvey or Irma", said Alemar.

Trump is quoting praise from Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Rossello, who says the president and the Trump administration have "delivered" for the US territory.

"The only way for this to work is for us to have collaboration", Rossello said.
