His portrayal of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live earned Baldwin the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at Sunday's 69th annual Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

The Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama went to Laura Dern for "Big Little Lies".

"Saturday Night Live" triumphed early for a season of skewering President Donald Trump, while the ceremony and host Stephen Colbert did likewise.

Baldwin walked out on stage to accept his Emmy from Seth Meyers and James Corden and started off his speech with 'At long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy'.

The 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set for tonight, which promises a night of celebration and recognition for the most talented figures previous year on television.

If it wasn't for Trump, Baldwin wouldn't have won his most recent Emmy.

"This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys period", the former White House spokesman stated, explicitly referencing that time he blatantly lied to the press pool about the crowd size at Trump's inauguration.

The comedian's biting portrayal of Trump during and after last year's presidential election helped SNL to its most-watched and most-talked about season in seven years. Waithe became the first African American woman to win in the category, with a shoutout "to my LGBTQI family".

After receiving her Emmy for best comedy actress, Julia Louis-Dreyfus of HBO's Veep, said the show had prepared "a whole story line about impeachment, but we abandoned it because we were anxious that someone else might get to it first".

"I want to thank my wife", he continued. "Turns out I was wrong".

"The Handmaid's Tale" won the Emmy for best drama.

Colbert (edged by "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver" for best variety series, a loss he amusingly punctuated with fellow also-ran Jimmy Kimmel) even assumed that Trump would tune in, addressing him directly.
