Treasury Secretary Mnuchin denies using government plane for personal travel

Mnuchin has claimed that his use of government aircraft, which costs about $25,000 an hour, was due to a need for a "secure communications facility" while traveling.

Revelations about the request prompted a backlash, with the director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington saying Mr Mnuchin can not "be expecting taxpayers to foot the bill for a Hollywood lifestyle".

"So let me just set the record straight, first of all, the government has never paid for any of my personal travel".

Mnuchin said he spends "probably over 50 percent" of his time on national security issues and sanctions nearly daily.

I mention all of this so that, the next time anyone from this administration talks about the "culture of entitlement" that holds back poorer Americans, you can laugh in their face.

"It is imperative that he have access to secure communications, and it is our practice to consider a wide range of options to ensure he has these capabilities during his travel, including the possible use of military aircraft".

"I'm very sensitive to the use of Government funds", he added.

Steve Mnuchin, a Hollywood producer who became U.S. Treasury Secretary, took a government plane to Kentucky to watch the total solar eclipse atop the nation's gold reserve. The secretary's office said he was there for meetings about tax reform.

The Kentucky trip sparked controversy after Mnuchin's wife posted a photo on Instagram that showed Mnuchin and Linton stepping off the government jet. (Linton later apologized for her reaction after making her account private, calling her response "condescending").

After the Yale alumni told Mr. Mnuchin that he had a moral obligation to quit Mr. Trump's cabinet, Mr. Mnuchin issued a statement denouncing hate, defending the president and refusing to quit. Did you think this was a personal trip?!
