Mnuchin has claimed that his use of government aircraft, which costs about $25,000 an hour, was due to a need for a "secure communications facility" while traveling.
Revelations about the request prompted a backlash, with the director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington saying Mr Mnuchin can not "be expecting taxpayers to foot the bill for a Hollywood lifestyle".
"So let me just set the record straight, first of all, the government has never paid for any of my personal travel".
Mnuchin said he spends "probably over 50 percent" of his time on national security issues and sanctions nearly daily.

"It is imperative that he have access to secure communications, and it is our practice to consider a wide range of options to ensure he has these capabilities during his travel, including the possible use of military aircraft".
