Butkus, Hornung Watch Lists Announced

He became the first defensive lineman in school history to score a touchdown out of an offensive formation so it makes sense that Clemson defensive end Christian Wilkins would be up for the Paul Hornung Award which goes to college football's most versatile player.

Arkansas junior linebacker Dre Greenlaw was named to the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, an honor presented annually to the nation's best linebacker by the Butkus Foundation, it was announced Monday. Forty-six student-athletes made the cut for this year's watch list. Fielding punts, Fant had 11 returns for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns (at Miami (Ohio) and vs. Houston Baptist), and earned All-Conference USA First Team honors despite playing only nine games.

Lorenzo Carter (6-6, 242) is a native of Norcross, Georgia. He averaged 15.3 yards per play, the most among all Big Ten players. Also subbing in on kickoffs, Fant had five returns for 106 yards, including a long of 59. The Fayetteville product was the only player to win SEC Freshman of the Week twice.

"We have a terrific Watch List again this year", said Paul Hornung, namesake of the Award, who legendary Coach Vince Lombardi called "the most versatile man ever to play the game".

Malik Jefferson lands on another 2017 preseason award watch list. The victor and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award Banquet presented by KentuckyOne Health, to be held at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville on March 8, 2018. He finished the year as an All-Big 12 second-team selection by the league and Associated Press.
