Jose Quintana traded from White Sox to Cubs in all-Chicago swap

Epstein and White Sox GM Rick Hahn were able to iron out a deal the worked for both sides without too many other partners driving up the price.

Jose Quintana is headed to the Cubs.

Dylan Cease is the other big prize for the Sox, the No. 2 prospect in the Cubs' system and a right-handed hurler now also in A-ball.

"He's a true professional who had to deal with everything from poor run support to the bullpen occasionally letting him down, the defense letting him down", Hahn said. So overall, the defense should improve behind Quintana which means he should approach his FIP numbers (4.01) and have a better chance of adding some wins for the first time in his career (50-54).

"It's one that allows us to continue to add to the prospect base that we've accumulated in a potentially high impact way". But if the team can't get its act together before the July 30 trade deadline and cut into Milwaukee's division lead, I'm all for doing more deals now to reload for 2018. Jimenez is the key piece for the White Sox. He has eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 42 games this season, but more importantly, he can do devastating things at the plate ... like break stadium lights. A power-hitting outfielder who projects as a middle-of-the-order type bat.

That is, of course, if they decide to deal him at all. That being the case, this isn't a blockbuster move that is guaranteed to push the Cubs over the top.

The Cubs will slot Quintana into a rotation that has struggled this season, posting a 4.66 ERA on the season (ranking 17th in baseball and eighth in the National League, right ahead of the Phillies).

He's a 28-year-old lefty with a career 3.41 ERA entering this season. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder struck out 74 in 512/3 innings. With the trades, we've acquired some very highly regarded, potentially impact, players. Feinsand reported that Sonny Gray posted a 1.71 ERA over his final three starts of the first half of the season. "Right now, you can be playing for a specific organization but you also have to play for the rest of the organizations in major leagues because this is a business". Over the past year Chicago has traded Gleyber Torres, Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease, all top five prospects in their system.

"I'm not surprised that they moved me, but I didn't know where I'd go", Quintana said. What this reflects is that it would have taken a package that included Derek Fisher, Francis Martes, Kyle Tucker and other prospects to acquire Quintana. We make sure we have multiple looks and a high level of comfort with anyone before we put any specific proposals out there. The Cubs traded former AL MVP George Bell to the White Sox for Sammy Sosa and Ken Patterson.
