The top nominations will be read by "Veep's" Anna Chlumsky and Shemar Moore, who previously starred on "Criminal Minds". To secure Emmy votes, networks and studios went on a lavish spending spree in recent months to market their offerings at a moment when there are more TV shows than ever. It was the victor in the category for five consecutive seasons, tying the record set by NBC's "Frasier" from 1994- 98. Donald Glover's freshman "Atlanta" earned a best comedy bid, as did "Master of None", starring its nominated co-creator, Aziz Ansari, and "black-ish".
"Westworld" also ruled the acting categories, with Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood nominated for best lead actors, and Thandie Newton and Jeffrey Wright recognised in the supporting actor categories.
Colbert's The Late Show had been left out of the Best Variety Talk Show category previous year, cementing a perception that the show was struggling. It won 12 Emmys a year ago, including its second consecutive best drama award. "It's been an incredible year for broadcast television, including a return to the prestigious drama series category with 'This Is Us, ' not to mention a record-breaking number of nominations for 'SNL, ' which is the gift that keeps on giving 42 years in", said NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt in a statement on Thursday, shortly after nominations were announced. Other big-screen stars making a splash on the small screen Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, nominated for "Big Little Lies", which is competing with "Feud" for best limited series.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) and Westworld lead the Emmy nominations with an impressive 22 nods. This year it has many strong chances to do so, with 18 total Emmy nods. In all, nine FX Networks series received Emmy recognition in 35 categories, including 16 total actor nominations.
Washington said the "sweeping array" of shows that received nominations "enthrall a worldwide audience".
