OU, OSU well represented on All-Big 12 Football Team

This nomination comes days after Smith was placed on a watch list for the 2017 Bednarik Award, which is given to the best defensive player in the country.

Armstrong was also the only unanimous selection for defense for the Preseason All-Big 12 First Team. Mayfield repeated as the Conference's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

West Virginia University senior running back Justin Crawford has been named to the Big 12 Preseason All-Conference team, and redshirt junior quarterback Will Grier was named preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, selected by media representatives who cover the league.

In his 39 game career, Smith has 24 starts, 12.0 sacks, 26.0 tackles for loss and 135 total tackles. The following week at West Virginia, he boasted six stops and two tackles in the backfield. He is coming off a season in which he registered 12 rushing touchdowns, which tied for third in the Big 12.

For the fifth time in the seven years since the Big 12 moved to 10 teams, OU has been picked to win this year's league championship in a preseason media poll released by the conference office Thursday. FOX23 News will have live coverage from the event on both days.

Risner and Reed, along with other team captains Jesse Ertz, Trent Tanking and Dayton Valentine in addition to head coach Bill Snyder, will represent K-State at 2017 Big 12 Football Media Day next Tuesday at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

And on the defensive side, I sided with Oklahoma linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo over Kansas defensive end Dorance Armstrong.

Armstrong and his KU football squad will begin the 2017 season on Saturday, September 2 with a home game against Southeast Missouri State.
