World mayors urge G20 leaders to 'save the planet'

"With the Trump administration's withdrawal from the Paris climate accords, national policy on climate change will emerge from U.S. cities working to reduce emissions and become more resilient to rising sea levels, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said at the annual U.S. Conferences of Mayors meeting in Miami Beach", ABC reported.

Landrieu will speak Monday and is set expected to launch the mayors' agenda for the future.

"The country is hungry for results: and that's what Mayors serve every day to the people in their communities".

Garcetti also led Saturday's joint meeting of the conference's Latino Alliance and the Immigration Reform Task Force with Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait and Mayor Jorge Elorza of Providence, Rhode Island discussing what Garcetti described as "an immigration agenda that puts families first".

The Mayors of Newton and Long Beach are the nation's top winners in the 2017 Mayors' Climate Protection Awards, an initiative sponsored by The U.S. Conference of Mayors and Walmart.

While making the switch would come with a high upfront cost (officials estimate Miami Beach would have to buy at least $24 million of solar panels to generate enough energy), three USA cities have already made the transition.

"We have outlined an ambitious - and achievable - agenda for the next years, and we're looking forward to getting back out in our communities and making a difference, not just for our individual communities, but for the country", said USCM Vice President, Mayor Stephen Benjamin of Columbia, SC.

As far as the dialogue on healthcare, Buttigieg says that both Republican and Democrat mayors from around the United States say that the current GOP Senate Healthcare Bill is not the answer to healthcare problems. "There may be a little bit of a disagreement about how actually to deal with it", said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D), who is becoming the next president of the conference. "This project came out of our desire to marry these two priorities in a way that is efficient, innovative, and inclusive and share the benefits of solar technology with lower income households", said Newton Mayor Setti Warren. "I think America's mayors more than ever have a responsibility to solve issues in our cities, and at the same time we need to coordinate nationally in order to do it".

Landrieu said there's "near unanimity" among conference members that climate change is real and caused by human actions.

The three resolutions, numbers 59, 60 and 79, can be found here and here.

A May survey of local sustainability efforts, conducted by the conference and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, initially only included 80 mayors who hold leadership positions within the conference. There are almost 1,400 such cities in the country today, and each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor.
