Texas man charged in boating accident that killed 4-year-old

He has had his bail set by a judge at $150,000. He is now out on bond.

A young girl has died and her father had his legs amputated after they were struck by a boat on a Central Texas lake.

Her father still remains in serious condition and was undergoing surgery on Monday, according to the family.

A 4-year-old girl is dead after being caught up in the propeller of a house boat that reportedly backed up to her Friday evening.

The girl sustained multiple lacerations all over her body.

Police in Temple say they're still investigating the incident and additional charges may be filed.

Court papers say she drowned after the propeller struck her.

Another witness said she was shouting at the driver that there were people behind the boat when it began to back up.

Jason Stuart Bernal Sunday was charged with criminally negligent homicide.

"Jason Bernal stated from the captain's position in the boat he could not see behind him because the boat is three-stories tall", the papers state.

Several agencies responded to the scene, including Temple Police Department, Temple Fire and Rescue, Morgan's Point Police, Morgan's Point Dive Team, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Crotty Funeral home in Belton has also offered to cover Kaitlyn's funeral free of charge. The campaign page says that Patrick Oliver does not now have medical insurance as he recently changed jobs and does not yet have benefits.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, after the Temple Police Department in Texas presented its case against Bernal, a complaint that he had committed criminal negligent homicide was issued against him by the Bell County district attorney's office on Sunday afternoon.
