Pakistan militant punished as India PM visits US

"The way I have been welcomed by the President and the First Lady is the honour for 125 billion Indians", Modi said at the White House. Concerns in New Delhi have centered on whether India will remain a priority relationship for the U.S.

In a separate statement, Jagdip Ahluwalia, executive director of Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston, said the United States and India share a symbiotic relationship, and Modi's first meeting with Donald Trump is an important step in strengthening the relationship between the two nations. Prior to the meet, Modi was accorded a warm welcome with the US President and the first lady Melania coming out of the White House to receive him.

Despite differences over issues such as immigration and climate change, Modi is expected to assure Trump that the United States has nothing to fear from India's growing economic clout.

"And it's just a small section", he said, apparently referring to Uttar Pradesh - one of India's most populous states.

Perhaps the most important outcome of their meeting will be putting to rest the notion that the U.S. -India relationship is adrift.

Modi shares with Trump an outlook of deregulation as was specified in the "Make in India" initiative, which was meant to dismantle "obsolete and obstructive frameworks" to business development in India.

"It also underlines the fact that both India and USA face threat of terrorism and are working together to counter this threat", the MEA added. "That's something [both sides] might hope to correct".

"In our conversation today, President Trump and I have discussed all dimensions of US-India relations", he said at the end of a visit which has seen the announcement of several defense deals. After all US's outlook towards South Asia in general and Indian sub-continent in particular is always suspicious and is evident from the history. There is no US ambassador in New Delhi (though White House aide Kenneth Juster is reported as a likely candidate to fill the slot) and no assistant secretary is in place for South Asian affairs at the State Department - diplomatic absences that can not help but cause even more unease in New Delhi.

The company is looking to India after sales in the greater China region, once a major factor in Apple's rise, fell 14 percent year over year to $10.7 billion in the most recent quarter.

Trump is speaking alongside India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House.

The agreement for around 22 unarmed surveillance drones is among the agreements on the agenda, while a deal for co-producing F-16 fighter aircraft was also finalised before the visit between Lockheed Martin and Tata. The terrorists who threaten both countries also share a sanctuary - namely, Pakistan - that has provided safe haven for groups responsible for terrorist strikes in India as well as for attacks on US soldiers in Afghanistan.

"The friendship between the USA and India is built on shared values and a commitment to democracy".

Trump has also softened the tone he took on the campaign trail against China, a strategic adversary of India's. "Terrific meeting with Narendra Modi. In that sense, China is concerned".

"Economically, India is doing very well", he said. And much like Trump in the US, Modi in India is a figurehead for grassroots conservative nationalism and his supporters feel emboldened to act out.
