Celtics select Jayson Tatum with No

Now, the Celtics should be saying all that they are about Tatum.

Instead, they got a Blue Devil.

The Knicks and Bulls reportedly are high on Jackson. Ironically, the Lakers and Celtics rivalry, the 30 for 30, had just came out, so I had a little background with Danny Ainge going into the meeting.

A nice player, for sure, but with all due respect, a bit of a buzzkill. After Thomas fell to injury in Game 2 of their conference finals series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Celtics went on to be eliminated in Game 5. All signs pointed to fireworks.

Many players would be overwhelmed by a jam-packed, three-day mini-camp, and rightfully so - it's a lot to handle.

The Celtics started with the No. 1 pick after winning the NBA Draft lottery, but traded down with the Philadelphia 76ers to acquire an additional first-round pick sometime in the next two years.

Though Jackson has not worked out for the Celtics, it was reported Wednesday that the team had received his medical information. He was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Porzingis is still a Knick, ignoring Jackson's phone calls - at least for now.

"But we've had many conversations with [the Bulls] over the last couple years". Didn't matter, as those talks dissipated. Tatum is also a solid rebounder. It's just not a move-the-dial, fire-up-the-fan-base pick. He's a likely top-five selection.

Jayson Tatum is a prolific scorer and maybe the numbers don't show that, but he can score in many ways.

"LeBron James, he's the difference", the 19-year-old St. Louis native said. "I'm trying not to cry right now. I can't wait to go and learn from coach (Brad) Stevens and Isaiah Thomas and just everybody on that roster".

But once again we're talking about potential, which of course is another word for unpredictable.

It was the second straight year the Celtics have chosen third overall. If you're the Boston Celtics, you're happy about the pick.

"Jayson's a talented player", Kennard said. That being said, the Celtics are encouraged by Tatum's work ethic and basketball IQ - two things that should help him during the process. As we all should have seen coming, Danny Ainge did not pull the trigger, keeping all four of their total picks. We're really thrilled to have him. "That's a good thing", Coach Stevens said.

Nothing materialized because to hear the Celtics tell it, no offer or demand regarding a veteran player was reasonable.

"Playing with Jaylen. I think it would be pretty special", he said.
"I knew something about him; he knew something about me". After some laughs from the media, Ainge added, "That could get me in trouble there".

"There's nothing to do in Sacramento", Ainge said with a smile.

But Boston has a luxury not often afforded to teams in the National Basketball Association, where there is a distinct class separation between the haves and the have-nots.

After the Sixers deal, Ainge said he believed the team could get the player it would have selected with the top pick at No. 3.

Translation: Boston can build for now and build for later.

This was the 15th draft that Ainge has presided over.

The countdown to the 2017 NBA Draft is upon us. He has a well-deserved reputation as a stellar executive by making smart, shrewd decisions.

It feels like a missed opportunity.
