US Republican Steve Scalise shows signs of improvement after shooting

"We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over the last 36 hours", Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said.

The business of the House was resuming a day after a rifle-wielding attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game, critically wounding House GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and hitting aides and Capitol police.

Mr Scalise remains in a critical condition after undergoing several operations, though word came from the hospital during the game that he had improved.

Supporters of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., hold signs before the Congressional baseball game, Thursday, June 15, 2017, in Washington.

The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more risky than leaving them in place, Sava said.

The shooter was killed by police officers whose work won praise from Trump in his remarks.

The No. 3 House Republican will also require additional operations before leaving the hospital Sava said, though he added that an "excellent recovery is a good possibility".

Jennifer Scalise also is thanking the first responders who rushed to her husband's aid Wednesday and the staff at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where her husband remains in critical condition.

The bullet entered Scalise's left hip and tore across his pelvis, cracking bones and injuring organs and blood vessels.

Instead of wearing hats representing their home teams, as is the normal tradition, players on both teams wore Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, for part of the game.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said.

Sava said his risk of death is "substantially lower" than it was on Wednesday. He said doctors have turned down Scalise's sedation levels enough that he has been able to respond to visiting family members. Witnesses at the baseball field said Hodgkinson asked a local resident about the party affiliation of the congressmen; a few moments after he learned they were Republicans, he produced a semiautomatic rifle and began firing volleys of shots. His social media contained anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts.

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre presented the game ball to Capitol Police special agent David Bailey, who came out on the field on crutches after being injured in Wednesday's shooting, to throw out the first pitch to huge applause.
