Rep. Steve Scalise's condition is upgraded to serious from critical

Hodgkinson, who authorities said spent the last few months living in a white van parked at a local YMCA, opened fire just after 7 a.m. Wednesday on Republican lawmakers and staffers practicing for a charity baseball game scheduled the next day.

Scalise's security detail and other police officers shot and killed the assailant, James Hodgkinson of IL, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media.

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones".

Sava said that multiple teams have worked on the congressman, with a combination of surgeries and procedures. The injuries had put the majority whip at an "imminent risk of death", said Jack Sava, director of trauma care for MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He was shot in the hip with a rifle round, and suffered internal bleeding and damage to internal organs.

Democrat Cedric Richmond, a fellow Louisiana congressman, said as many others did that Scalise is a fighter.

From there, the Congressman went to ICU, where he remains today.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Jennifer Scalise said in the statement.

Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner also remains at the MedStar Washington hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to her ankle, but is in "good condition and good spirits" the hospital said.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body. That's a common approach, he added.

Congressional aide Zach Barth was the fourth person hit and is also expected to make a full recovery, NPR's Vanessa Romo reports.

She said Republican vitriol and caricatures of her had resulted in "calls to my home constantly, threats in front of my family, really predicated on their comments and their paid ads".

House Republicans met privately earlier to discuss the shootings, pray and sign oversized cards for the wounded.

Griner and Bailey have been hailed as heroes after taking down the shooter.
