Larson, Truex take top 2 spots in Michigan qualifying

Truex led 62 laps, second only to race victor Kyle Larson's 96, but finished sixth and lost the series lead to Larson by five points. His team had won at NASCAR's top level only once, at Darlington in the 2011 Southern 500. Scott, then, was refused entry to Victory Lane, as officials feared a riot would ensue if the young trophy girl, a white woman, were to give Scott, the victor, a smooch on the cheek, or even a warm embrace, as she presented the trophy.

We talked about the rookies last week but there's no better time to take Erik Jones. Cars 3 finished No. 1 in the box office over the weekend. It doesn't feel like it, because since he broke through last August at Michigan International Speedway, he has been a contender just about every week.

The 48-year-old Jones, a cost engineer for General Motors, who's 10th in points after eight races, is working on proposals for potential sponsors. Both men combined to lead 158 of the race's 200 laps. Like in Cup, the series leader, Justin Allgaier, is just one point up heading to MI.

Larson won the race, and Chase Elliott was second. While his fall contained two hiccups in the form of restarts over the final 15 laps, he ended up finishing seventh.

According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, Kyle Larson is listed as the favorite with 9/2 odds. I would say he has more than earned his stripes! We are balancing our cars better and trying to get to where we can get into the corner better. "But inside lane restarts at the end just killed us". In the meantime, Friday was another day of "really close, but not quite there" for the four-car squad. He trails Larson by five points. Nobody else has more than four.

The drivers have seesawed on top of the standings and on who has the edge on any given week. Jimmie Johnson and Jamie McMurray both lost their brakes at the same time entering Turn One and wrecked hard. He also was second in the All-Star race, which doesn't count in the standings.

That's a Herculean style advantage on the field at this point in the year.

That leaves Elliott with a little extra pressure entering MI this weekend, a track where he ran second twice a year ago. Session three cars take spots one through 12. You get just in a bad spot, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Consider the economic difficulties hitting the lower series right now.

Though Truex finished sixth at the 2-mile MI oval he felt he had the dominant auto until late-race pit strategy and inside lane restarts spoiled his chance of a victory. He is a two-time victor at MIS and an average finish of 12.6. "Not the way we wanted to start the day, but it is what it is". Will a playoff battle between them spark a rivalry? It was fun to go fast out there and have a lot of grip. Considering Kyle Larson and Martin Truex Jr. will make up Row 1 Sunday, I think there is a good chance that trend continues. "Martin has been so fast all year long". "If I wipe out a vehicle, we don't have a big enough crew to get another one fixed for the next race".

Who would have thought? The days of Gordon, Stewart, and Earnhardt are rapidly fading into the rear-view mirror.
