After Scalise was shot in the hip, the bullet traveled through his pelvis, fractured bones and injured internal organs.
Those who knew Hodgkinson say he was unhappy with the political direction of the country but they never expected him to turn violent. Infection remains a considerable risk in the days and weeks during Scalise's extended hospital stay, Sava said.
Since then he has had more than one surgery and doctors expect he will continue to have more in the near future. Sava says Scalise has responded to family members while he's still under sedation.
"He's in some trouble, but he's a great fighter and he's going to be OK, we hope", the President said.
"Most of us would not even think to consider that a benign wound", Sava said.

The president paid a visit to Scalise on Wednesday night.
