As the game progressed, MedStar Washington Hospital Center released an update on Scalise's condition. The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Scalise's hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way.

Scalise was still in critical condition Thursday night after another surgery, "but has improved in the last 24 hours", according to a statement from the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

"The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago", Sava said, suggesting that the Louisana Republican had faced an imminent risk of death when he arrived by helicopter at the facility after Wednesday's shooting.

"He clearly knows they're there and appreciates their presence", Sava said. Scalise's Capitol Police detail, two officers of whom were among the injured, has been credited with saving the lives of many present.

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre presented the game ball to Capitol Police special agent David Bailey, who came out on the field on crutches after being injured in Wednesday's shooting, to throw out the first pitch to huge applause.

She says she's grateful to President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and all of Scalise's Capitol Hill colleagues "who have reached out to us during this most challenging time". Steve Scalise is "in some trouble" but "he's going to be OK, we hope", offering that assessment as a shaken U.S. House gaveled back into session a day after the shooting of Scalise and others at a baseball field.

President Donald Trump did not attend but sent a video message of support.

"And let's keep the Warmbier family and the Scalise family and all of the victims of the congressional shooting in our hearts and prayers", Trump continued.

CNN's Manu Raju reported Thursday that Scalise remained in critical condition after coming out of his latest surgery. But at a news conference, Pelosi bristled at comments made by a few Republicans and conservative activists who blamed heated Democratic rhetoric for the incident.

Scalise's office had initially stated Wednesday that the Congressman was in stable condition, stating prior to his first surgery that "the Whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone". When the members of the Republican team were announced, mention of Scalise's name drew a standing ovation throughout the stadium. His social media contained anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts.

The Congressional Baseball Game began shortly after it's scheduled start of 7:05 p.m. (2305 UTC) Thursday.

Sava later told The Associated Press that Scalise's care is on track for someone with such a severe injury but that he still faces many risks to recovery.
