Security tightened ahead of Congressional Baseball Game after shooting

Players usually sport the uniform of their home states and districts, although Thursday they donned Louisiana State University uniforms as a tribute to Scalise, who remains in critical condition after being shot in the hip. "He is more responsive and is speaking with his loved ones", the doctor said.

A single rifle wound caused "substantial damage" to Scalise's internal organs and blood loss, his doctor explained Friday.

Democrats easily defeated Republicans 11-2 Thursday in the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game, in an annual tradition that took on renewed importance in the wake of Wednesday's shooting at a GOP baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia. The announcer's mention of Congressman Steve Scalise, the House majority whip who was critically wounded in the attack Wednesday, brought the masses to their feet.

The shooter, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL, was shot and killed by Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise's security detail. He had a history of posting angry messages against Trump and other Republicans on social media.

"He was as critical as can be when he came in", Sava said, adding that Scalise was at "imminent risk of death".

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.

Scalise, 51, is among four people shot by a gunman at a House Republican baseball practice Wednesday in the Washington suburbs.

President Donald Trump visited Scalise at the hospital Wednesday night and later said in a speech, "He's a great fighter and he's going to be OK, we hope".

"It's a pretty good time for all, except for the fact that the Democrats beat us so much", Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said on CNN before describing what happened. Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.

"It's my job to be pessimistic, so if you accuse me of being optimistic, I feel bad about that", Sava said. After additional surgeries and a period of rehabilitation, Sava said that the congressman should be able to walk and even run.

"They saved a lot of lives", the president said.

"Steve is a wonderful friend he's been a wonderful mentor not only to me, not only to the Louisiana delegation to which he's a member of but to the entire Republican congress" said Rep. Ralph Abraham. "And that's what we have to make sure that we, as Americans, say 'enough is enough.' If politics and policy differences are what divide us, there are ways to solve it at the ballot box".
