Escaped Georgia Prison Inmates Captured

The Putnam County Sheriff says he is elated these men are off the street, but is still grieving the loss of his two corrections officers.

Both of the suspects are now in custody at the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.

The capture was a relief to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, who said the county's work isn't done.

On Tuesday morning, a nationwide manhunt for two Georgia convicts was set in motion after the prisoners murdered two guards before escaping from the compound. He served with the Georgia Department of Corrections for eight years. Jasper County Sheriff Chris Malphus later said that these reports were unfounded and his deputies were allowed to stand down. "They told them exactly who they were".

After taking clothing and valuables, the men fled in the couple's auto.

"They have known each other for quite a while", Myrick said.

They held the terrified couple for three hours, until they chose to go on the run again. Some 15 minutes later, the two managed to escape their bonds and call police.

"It's alright. You survived", the man tells his wife.

Authorities were vigilant and did a good job of spreading the word about the escapees.

The chase ended with a crash near the community of Christiana, Tennessee.

Authorities believe they tied up a couple in Shelbyville earlier in the day and stole a Jeep and guns. They made their way to another home, but police say this time the homeowner held them at gunpoint with help from a neighbor after they tried to steal the homeowner's vehicle. Deputies then arrived to arrest the fugitives.

Rowe and Dubose were finally taken alive. He called them violent repeat offenders and extremely risky, having taken the guards' 9 mm pistols.

Rowe and Dubose are accused of killing two Georgia prison guards on a bus before fleeing in a stolen truck earlier this week, prompting a massive manhunt.

One of the escapees is then believed to have shot and killed Sergeant Christopher Monica and Sergeant Curtis Billue.

Sills described them as "dangerous beyond description".

The pair were driving 33 inmates between prisons when Rowe and Dubose overpowered them and then used the their own guns to kill them about 6.45am on Tuesday, authorities have said.

Police say they forced their way into an elderly couple's home at gunpoint on Kingree Road in Bedford County.

Law enforcement had been deluged with tips as the reward for the arrest of the two fugitives climbed to $130,000 - $65,000 for each. Gwyn was not immediately sure who would collect the reward.

Rowe was serving a sentence of up to life in prison for armed robbery and aggravated assault in a 2001 case. While there may be more warrants in Tennessee, she relays to the inmate, Rutherford County is giving him to Georgia on the charges he faces for the deaths of the officers.

Monica, 42, and Billue, 58, were both transfer sergeants at Baldwin State Prison.
