Sanders: Sickened at shooting attack by possible supporter

Investigators say Hodgkinson opened fire on a group of Republican Congress members who were practicing for a charity baseball game early Wednesday morning. Five were shot, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), on the Alexandria, Va., baseball field.

Republican Congressman Steve Scalise has been undergoing a third surgery after he and others were shot at a baseball practice by a man hostile to the GOP.

Hodgkinson's Facebook page is largely political, his profile picture is a caricature of Bernie Sanders as Uncle Sam, while his feed is filled with anti-Trump sentiments such as "Trump is guilty and should go to prison for treason".

The FBI said authorities are speaking with people who knew Hodgkinson or who may have encountered him.

Several Republican and Democratic members of the House of Representatives and Senate on Thursday said a security review was long overdue.

"We are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good", said the president.

Sanders, an independent who ran as a progressive populist but was defeated by Hillary Clinton, said the suspect had "apparently volunteered" on his campaign.

The FBI said it has reason to believe Hodgkinson had been in the DC area since March.

An online search of newspapers shows that he frequently wrote letters to his local newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen of them between 2010 and 2012.

He also wrote frequent letters to his hometown newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen letters between 2010 and 2012, many of which included complaints about the same theme: income inequality.

"They don't deserve this, I don't deserve this, my daughters don't deserve all this".

On March 4, 2011, he wrote that Congress should rewrite tax codes to ease the tax burdens of the middle class.

Later that year, in October 2011, he applauded the Occupy Wall Street protesters in NY and Boston, writing that the demonstrators "are exhausted of our do-nothing Congress doing nothing while our country is going down the tubes".

Scalise was one of the people Hodgkinson shot.

He also had an arrest record going back to the 1990s, including a battery charge in 2006.

"I would quote the late, great Michael Jackson", said Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., a close friend of Scalise's and the pitcher on the Democrats' team.

"My husband had yelled at him because the kids were outside and everything and he didn't stop", she said. The charges were dismissed later that year, according to the court clerk.

"He's been barred from all county board meetings and stuff like that".

Hodgkinson came to the attention of IL law enforcement as recently as late March.

Tickets to the game are available online and were selling at a rate of 500 per hour on Thursday afternoon, according to Roll Call. At the time police recovered a pocket knife, hair they say was pulled out of his girlfriend's head and a 12-gauge shotgun at the scene.

Sanders said, "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms".

The deputy cautioned Hodgkinson about shooting around homes, given that the rounds can travel up to a mile. "I can see he's got a rifle or something because he shouldered it, and he shot across this field here about three shots".

He described the attack as "very, very brutal".

Roger Williams (R-TX) is brought away by emergency medical service personnel Eugene Simpson Stadium Park where a shooting took place on Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia.

Stephen Brennwald, an Alexandria lawyer, also saw Hodgkinson at the YMCA and said he often seemed to be staring into space.

"I've known him pretty well all of my life", he said. "I thought it was some exercise".

"This one never crossed the line, but he was always angry", he said.

"Bernie is the Only Candidate in Decades that Really Cares about the Working Class", Hodgkinson posted on June 13, 2016. The contacts were made via phone calls and emails. "He is grateful for the courageous actions of US Capitol Police, first responders and colleagues", his office said in a statement. Someone is listening. So, think before you type.
