The investigation into ties between President Trump's campaign and the Russian government has now turned to investigating Trump himself for obstruction of justice, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Trump wrote, "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

President Donald Trump is telling his Twitter followers that they are witnessing the "single greatest WITCH HUNT in American history".

On Thursday afternoon, Trump sent two tweets attacking his former opponent.

Schiff's call to pursue the obstruction of justice investigation comes after the top lawmakers on the Senate Intelligence Committee said on Thursday that they would leave that probe to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is in charge of the Justice Department's investigation into Russian Federation election meddling.

News that Mueller is now investigating Trump for obstruction of justice comes amid reports that Trump has discussed whether to remove the special counsel.

The Post report cites anonymous sources who were briefed on requests made by investigators. Those officials are: Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence; Michael Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency; and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director.

Furthermore, 43 percent of respondents said they believe Comey's June 8 congressional testimony hurt Trump, while 23 percent agree with the president that it helped him.

In a survey of registered voters, 45 percent said they trust Comey to tell the truth, while 32 percent said they trust Trump. Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats is reportedly cooperating with the investigation, as he has information that could be key to understanding if Trump did attempt to impede the investigation into Russian Federation and the election.

Comey prepared multiple contemporaneous memos documenting conversations with Trump that made him uneasy in the weeks before his May 9 firing.

The letter said the investigation will also probe Comey's testimony that Loretta Lynch, as President Barack Obama's attorney general, had directed him to describe an FBI probe into Hillary Clinton's email practices as merely a "matter" and to avoid calling it an investigation.

Mr Comey also said he had told Mr Trump that he was not under investigation.
