Rohatgi asks govt to relieve him from Attorney General post

He said the extension given to him by the government earlier this month was "ad hoc", till further orders, as it was done when the Prime Minister was on a visit to Russian Federation.

Rohatgi told TOI that that he had enjoyed a fantastic relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and the bureaucracy during the three-year period as AG, but now wants to get back to private practice.

Rohatgi who has been appointed as A-G in 2014 as soon as the Narenndra Modi led government took the charge at the centre argued in many contentious matters like the challenge to National Judicial Appointments Commission Act on appointment of judges for the higher judiciary. I consider the three-year term as enough and I had also served the previous BJP government for five years. "I have conveyed to the government last month that I don't wish to seek re-appointment".

In what has come as a surprise move, the country's top law officer Mukul Rohatgi has offered to step down.

In the month of May, Mr. Rohatgi, about the controversial triple talaq stated that instant divorce was not an essential part of Islam and it could not be allowed to continue by the court just because it has been in practice for 1400 years.

It is pertinent to mention here that recently two additional solicitor generals had written to the law ministry expressing their unwillingness to continue in the office.

Mukul Rohatgi was appointed as the 14th Attorney General of India in May 2014.
