George and Amal Clooney welcome twins: a boy and a girl

Actor George Clooney's wife Amal has given birth to twins, the couple's publicist said. The global human rights lawyer and her actor husband welcomed their bundles of joy, a boy and a girl, on Tuesday, their representative confirmed in a statement. "George is sedated and should recover in a few days", the family joked.

Sources confirmed in February that the Oscar victor and the worldwide human rights lawyer were expecting twins, and both George, 56, and Amal, 39, were very excited.

'I think it's the most responsible thing you can do, to have kids, ' he told People magazine.

The pair previously made headlines all across the world when long-standing bachelor George and Amal became engaged in 2014.

The couple, who own homes in Studio City, California, and Lake Como, Italy, had their 17th century manor in Oxfordshire extensively renovated ahead of the arrival of the twins.

"I will not go to South Sudan anymore and in the Congo, Amal will no longer go to Iraq and she will avoid places where she knows she is not welcome".

Other notable celebrity multiple pregnancies this year have included singer Pharrell Williams, whose wife Helen Lasichanh gave birth to triplets in January, and Beyonce, who is expecting twins with husband Jay Z. How are they going to negotiate their careers and their maternity?

"'We chose to be much more responsible, to avoid the danger", said the Academy award victor.

Amal Clooney's parents said they were delighted to welcome their grandchildren.
