'Wonder Woman' banned in Lebanon because lead actress is Israeli

The world needed a hero to save it from awful summer movies like "Baywatch" and the latest "Pirates of the Caribbean" outing - and Wonder Woman is up to the task.

It would have been easy to have Wonder Woman spend the majority of the movie fighting various foes in big action set pieces, but what struck me was the humanity within the movie, she could spend all day fighting but at the end of the day she is still human, she feels pain and sadness and that it is conveyed very well through great direction and acting. Much of the film's humor is similar to any fish-out-of-water story, as Diana is making her first trip to the average world.

Perhaps most significantly, the tone feels right.

Variety also notes that other films starring Gadot, including Fast and Furious 6 and Furious 7, were screened in Lebanese theaters.

"Wonder Woman" follows the character from her childhood on the secluded island of Themyscira, where she is raised by a tribe of mythical Amazon women including her mother Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) and aunt Antiope (Robin Wright). Lebanon is officially at war with Israel. I had only seen her in supporting roles, so to take on one of DC's most famous heroines in her own movie, I was anxious.

Several weeks ago, Wonder Woman was tracking to open in the U.S.at around $65 million, a respectable opening that would be on par with the first Captain America and Thor movies.

The new Wonder Woman film has been banned in Lebanon - because the lead actress is Israeli. Packing her bulletproof bracelets, her golden "Lasso of Truth" and a "God-Killer" sword with which to slay Ares, Diana ships off to London with Steve, joining his covert mission to dismantle a weapons program headed by a power-mad general (Danny Huston) and a chemist named Doctor Poison (Elena Anaya). Diana's near-invulnerability to human dictates gives her the freedom to dismiss their social mores, which can be played as alternately amusing and empowering. For Wonder Woman, the bracelets give her the power to be defended against bullets other ammunition launched by enemies. The second part is where the bulk of the action comes from, as Diana begins to fight this war. She can go anywhere from here.
